CARRRAGEENAN

Carrageenan is a safe and natural remedy that is extracted from red algae and it is used for many different things including the food industry, where it is known as E407. When you are working with carrageenan, you must first boil it in water. About 100 grams of carrageenan goes to 2-3 liters of water. Afterwards mix it with chalk and pigments if wanted. The paint which contains the carrageen works really well on woodwork, such as ceilings and other substrates that have an absorbency.

CELLULOSE GLUE

Cellulose glue is another type of binder. This type is also called methylcellulose and is used for glue colour and tempera. Methylcellulose is better at binding to the surface, and can therefore be used for walls, ceilings and much more. Cellulose has several benefits. Among other things, it is one of the cheaper binders, which at the same time gives a nice colour that can be used for many different things. In addition, the glue can be used to make several different types of paint. For example, you can mix a little linseed oil in to get a tempera paint. Tempera paint is an ancient painting technique that can be traced back to the Middle Ages. This type of paint is clear and deep, dries quickly and has a good durability.

When you are making paint with cellulose glue step one is to mix the glue with water. This is done by adding about 25 grams of glue per liter of water. To achieve the best consistency, it is important not to add too much glue. Afterwards the mixture should stand until the water is clear. There is many different pigments that can be added to the mixture. When you are adding pigments you must stir it very well until the mixture has a thick, paint-like consistency. This type of paint should not be contagious if you have used the right measurements. Cellulose glue can likewise be used to set up wallpaper because it has a good bonding ability.

BONE GLUE

Bone Glue is the third type of binder and when you are working with this type of glue, you must be aware of the temperature throughout the process. The Bone glue must be pre-swollen in cold water and afterwards it can be melted in water above 30 degrees. The use of Bone Glue belongs to ancient techniques that can be traced many hundreds of years back. It gives a type of paint that reminiscent of those used for tempera. Bone Glue is especially used for paintings where you paint in layers. Other types of paint can make the canvas dry, brittle and difficult to work with. Using Bone Glue as a binder gives it greater flexibility on the canvas and it does not get the same dry look. When painting with Bone Glue, you must start with putting it in cold water, which makes the Bone Glue able to absorb liquid and become soft and gel-like. Afterwards it must be heated up to between 30-60 degrees to be mixed properly with the pigment. Be careful not to boil it as it will damage the glue. The typical mixing ratio is 1 part of Bone Glue mixed together with 15-16 parts of Pigment.
